This Beautiful Fantastic
Finally! A movie for botany nerds, for artistic landscapers, for gardeners. The unrelentingly charming film This Beautiful Fantastic, written and directed by Simon Aboud, takes a familiar tale — curmudgeonly old man’s heart melts for an impossibly lovely young woman — and makes it magical. His leads, Tom Wilkinson, as the grouchy horticulturalist, and Jessica Brown Findlay as the sexy librarian dreaming of writing children’s books, are mesmerizing, really fine cinema actors, capable of telegraphing whole paragraphs of ideas and feelings with a transparent look. They’re as gorgeous as the flora that dominates the film’s action. Yes, growing plants is the action. No guns, no crashes. no violence. Just laughter and tears. We wish we’d written it.
