This Loss Behind Us

This Loss Behind Us” is a sports-themed poetry book containing work from the three winners of SportLiterate‘s 2017 chapbook contest. As the title suggests, cliches tend to accrue any time someone talks or writes about sports. But the poets in “This Loss” avoid that trap, offering insights and perspectives that lean toward the original and the melancholy. It’s a very adult book. Jack Bedell, the poet laureate of Louisiana, helps us understand Joe Frazier (and boxers in general) in new ways. Paul Hostovsky writes with wry humor about, among other things, a protective cup passed on to his son. (Our “Dodger Stadium Suite” is also included). These poems bear close reading and re-reading. Dem Bums are good!
