Casa Palma

When visiting the magical city of Guanajuato, the colorful and ingeniously constructed cultural mecca in the heart of Mexico, try to score a reservation at Casa Palma. Set halfway up a South-facing mountainside, with views of everything, Casa Palma is a beautifully renovated three-level house — and miniature orchard — situated on a narrow callejon (an alleyway without cars) in a neighborhood populated by local families and their dogs and chickens and little shops. The spacious home contains all the comforting amenities to which an American traveler is accustomed, yet those who stay here know they’ve arrived at a singular place far removed from home. And all for far less than the price of a generic hotel room.
