Knock Down the House
The award-winning documentary Knock Down the House by director Rachel Lears, covers four working-class, “regular” women — a registered nurse, a bartender, a coal miner’s daughter — running for Congress during the 2018 mid-term elections, including the sensationally charismatic, eloquent and inspiring Alexandra Ocasio-Cortez, who, most of us now know, shocked the world by defeating an entrenched establishment incumbent. Few films have made us cry so many tears of joys while simultaneously making our blood boil. KDTH is a valuable historical document. One day Americans will return to this extraordinary film to remember how far we’ve come from rampant sexism and second-class citizenry. For now, we watch with wonder, understanding that our nation will be a much better place when, instead of being characters in a nice story, these brave women represent the majority of our elected representatives.
