The Trial of the Chicago 7

The timing of Aaron Sorkin’s new historical drama, “The Trial of the Chicago 7,” couldn’t be better — or more poignant. After a summer in which millions of American’s discovered the reality of police brutality, the profound corruption of the authorities who control the uniformed thugs, and the shocking disrespect powerful men have toward the people’s Constitutional rights to protest, “Chicago 7” reminds us that this kind of despicable institutional violence has been going on since the Vietnam War (and earlier). A brilliant ensemble cast — Eddy Redmayne as Tom Hayden, Sacha Baron Cohen as Abby Hoffman, Mark Rylance as William Kunstler, Frank Langella as the incompetent Judge Julius Hoffman — paired with a smart, crackling script makes this particular history lesson a pleasure to re-learn.
